Arsenal Football Gift: ‘Alan Sunderland’s Dramatic FA Cup Winner’ Limited Edition Print.
The match was one of only three live televised matches that season. The other two were England v Scotland and Nottingham Forest’s European Cup final victory over Malmo. How times have changed eh?
Referred to as the ‘5 minute Final’, no Arsenal or Manchester United fan will ever forget the climax to the 1979 FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium.
Two nil down from goals by Brian Talbot (who incidentally, became the first player to win the FA Cup with different teams two seasons in a row, having been part of the Ipswich side that beat Arsenal the previous year) and Frank Stapleton, Manchester United heroically fought back with two dramatic late goals.
First, in the 86th minute, the big defender Gordon McQueen gave United a glimmer of hope. And just two minutes later, Sammy McIlroy stunned Arsenal by scuffing in a dramatic equalizer, after a dazzling run. You couldn’t write stuff like that.
But there was one more crazy twist to be had in this iconic FA Cup final. With socks around his ankles, Liam Brady took possession near the half way line and surged into the Manchester United half, running between two defenders. He slid the ball out left to Graham Rix who sent a pinpoint cross toward the far post and an on-rushing Alan Sunderland. With the United goalkeeper Bailey flapping, the Yorkshire born striker snuck in at the far post to bury the ball in the net.
Crazy stuff. But we think you’re gooner love this exclusive Goalhangers football artwork.
