Watford were trailing 1-0 from the first leg, but within 15 minutes of this pulsating game, Watford levelled on aggregate with a wonderful Matej Vydra over-the-shoulder volley, from Cassetti’s outside of the boot pass. It was a sublime pass and finish.
Leicester equalised, but Vydra scored another superb goal after a sweet one-two with Deeney. Vydra was BACK! And Watford were inspired.
Then, with the game heading for dreaded extra time, the Leicester City French winger Knockaert took a dive under Marco Cassetti’s slight touch in the box, everyone expected the ref Michael Oliver to book the player for cheating. But no.
This was Watford. The hornets don’t see decisions go their way too often. And this referee had ‘previous’.
The decision to award Leicester a penalty in the 6th minute of added time was beyond a joke. A truly scandalous decision. We were sat just yards from the ‘dive’, and the Watford fans around us were in shock and disbelief.
The crowd hushed. Knockaert looked nervous as he postured with hands on hips, waiting for the ref to blow his whistle.
From this moment forward, things took on a surreal, out of body experience.
The injured Almunia guessed correctly, dived to his left and brilliantly saved Knockaert’s penalty with his legs, then almost in slow motion moved his body to his right and beat out the rebound with a strong arm…and then Watford charged down the other end and delivered an absolutely stunning counter-punch!
Anya brought the ball down beautifully from the big punt out of the box, and sprinted down the wing, passing to substitute Fernando Forestieri. His pin point cross was headed back superbly by Jonathan Hogg (who’s fantastic run from the Watford box was sublime) and Deeney – back after being sent off against Leeds nine days previous – lifted the roof off the Rookery End with a thunderous volley straight down the throat of the Leicester goal!!
From total despair to incredible euphoria in 20 crazy seconds! It was bloody amazing.
Never mind “You’ll never see anything like this ever again!”, more like “Don’t scratch your eyes!”.
What an unbelievable moment! We’ll never forget it. You’ll never forget it.
