Arsenal Football Gift: ‘Thomas It’s Up For Grabs Now’. Michael Thomas Limited Edition Framed Print.
No Gooner will ever forget the last gasp goal scored by Michael Thomas at Anfield on 26th May 1989! It was insane.
Arsenal needed to win by two goals in order to pick up the 1988/89 First Division and prevent Liverpool from winning their 18th title. But no one could of predicted the drama that would unfold that evening.
George Graham’s side had been the leading team at the top of the First Division for much of the season. At the turn of the year, they had been 15 points ahead of Liverpool, but their form dropped as the season drew to a close, whilst Liverpool had been unbeaten since 1st January.
But despite being labelled underdogs, Arsenal took the lead in the 52nd minute with an Alan Smith header and then deep into injury time, and with just seconds left on the clock, Michael Thomas silenced the Liverpool fans with a dramatic last-gasp goal, giving Arsenal their ninth First Division title and denying Liverpool the chance of a second Double.
It was an incredible finish to a long season. One of the most dramatic football matches to grace the Anfield pitch, and a stunning title winning goal that Michael Thomas will never forget for the rest of his life.
