Nottingham Forest Football Print: Trevor Francis goal v Malmo in the 1979 European Cup Final. Limited Edition Framed Football Print of just 50.
Having knocked out the current holders Liverpool (who had won the last two finals) in the first round, Brian Clough and Peter Taylor’s brilliant man management skills took Forest all the way to the European final.
Having won the 1978 league title the year before, Clough and Taylor elected to spend much of the winnings on a player from Birmingham City.
His name was Trevor Francis, and he became the UK’s first £1 million footballer.
As it turned out, FIFA rules at the time stipulated that Francis could not play European football for 3 months. That meant the first game Francis would be allowed to play in, would be the European Cup Final.
So, with Archie Gemill out of favour and Martin O’Neil carrying an injury, the £1 million striker was selected to play, on the right wing. Classic Clough decision making.
In what was a pretty dull affair, with the Malmo team sitting back in defence, it took an inspired run by John Robertson down the left wing on 45 minutes, who then beat two Swedish defenders and whipped over a glorious cross to the far post, where none other than Trevor Francis launched at the ball to head it into the roof of the net!
It was a brilliant goal. An iconic goal that will be remembered by the watching millions.
Forest had beat Swedish side Malmö in Munich to win the clubs first ever European Cup, having only been promoted to the First Division two years prior, and after a First Division League title win.
An incredible achievement, that will surely never be repeated.
Clough said it best after the game with this classic quote. “It wasn’t a great game but they were a boring team, Malmö. In fact the Swedes are quite a boring nation. But we still won, so who cares?”
The words in red on the left side of the frame read:
ROBERTSON. IT’S THE FIRST TIME WE’VE SEEN HIM ON THE ATTACK, AND THERE’S FRANCIS! THE MILLION POUND MAN PUTS HIS NAME ON THE SCORE SHEET AND BREAKS THE DEADLOCK!
